Day 4, Part 2: Rwanda as a Farmland

After a late lunch, our group loaded into a variety of vans as we headed to a Solace Ministries-run demonstration farm of widows. Widows are divided into teams of 8; they each cultivate a plot of land. They are learning to irrigate (instead of depending solely upon the rainy season) by using a foot pump sort of like a stair-stepper (M tried it out - "I need exercise anyway!")
and are growing regular garden foods like cabbages, etc. They also are developing a fruit tree nursery and are breeding some cows.

The women all wear beautifully-patterned skirts and headwraps; their posture is impeccable.

A crowd of children had run down by the road as we started to leave. Everywhere we go, it seems that children gather... and, although they are shy at first, after they see their picture on the camera screen they are thrilled.

Afterward, we visited a health clinic in mid-construction. It is scheduled to open in February.

Finally, we got an evening drive through the city of Kigali as day changed to night and young people began congregating on every sidewalk and outside every shop. Taxis are motor scooters (passengers get a helmet), but most people walk - the city is bursting with a vibrant generation.
